The singer will talk about Self-ish at 7pm on Tuesday, November 17, sharing stories and memories from his career with the band.

Described as a lyric book, the hardback uses the words of Ned’s Atomic Dustbin songs to explore the events, thoughts and experiences behind them as Penney progressed from young songwriter to touring musician.

Penney said: “Talking constantly about myself is not exactly my idea of fun, so I decided to write a lyric book instead – because my words in our songs are what I am most proud of.”

He added that reflecting on the lyrics offered a way to explain what was happening in the band and his own life at different points in their story.

Ned’s Atomic Dustbin rose to fame in the early 1990s, scoring hit records and albums and performing around the world, including at UK festivals such as Glastonbury.

The band split in 1995 before reforming in 2008, and continues to perform with its original line-up.

Nick Sturgess, library manager, said: “Ned’s Atomic Dustbin is local and incredibly popular, so hearing Jonn’s reflections of his career as a self-styled ‘accidental rock star’ will no doubt prove fascinating.”

Copies of Self-ish will be available to buy at the event.

Places can be booked by calling Stourbridge Library on 01384 812950.
