Alfie Gibbs, who studies motor vehicle courses at Tamworth College, has been volunteering at Vergers Cottage, behind St Editha’s Church, alongside his parents.

Christine Harris, from Opus Training, who is overseeing the restoration project, contacted the college to praise Alfie’s attitude and initiative.

She said he had tackled every task with enthusiasm and had shown kindness by checking whether she needed help when he saw her working at the cottage during the week.

Vergers Cottage is an important part of Tamworth’s heritage, and the restoration aims to preserve the building for future generations.

Alfie said: “I wanted to get involved because I thought it would be a good opportunity to help with an important part of Tamworth’s history and give something back to the local community.

“I have really enjoyed helping others, learning new skills, and working alongside other volunteers. It has also taught me the importance of teamwork, patience, and taking pride in the work I do.”

He added that it had been rewarding to see the progress made and know the volunteers had played a part in restoring the cottage.

Ahmed Hussein, faculty director at South Staffordshire College, which Tamworth College is part of, said Alfie had represented the college well through his volunteering.

He said the student had demonstrated commitment, kindness and a willingness to help others, adding that such opportunities helped students develop skills and confidence while contributing to their communities.

Alfie has been presented with a certificate by the college in recognition of his community spirit and contribution to the project.
