Warwick Castle fights back at 'nonsense' claim it is 'most overrated attraction in the world'

Warwick Castle has fought back at an "unheard of" study claiming it was the most "overrated tourist attraction in the world".

In recent research by flight booking site Wingie, a ranking was made based on the number of key words indicating whether an attraction was "overrated".

But bosses – and visitors – have criticised the research after 73 per cent of guests rated the attraction as "excellent" or "very good".

A total of 40 key words and phrases, relative to the total number of reviews, was recorded, and an overall score was determined.

According to the results, the historic West Midlands castle was named as one of the most "overrated tourist spots in the world" – that's right, the entire world.

The list also mentioned some of the country's most popular places such as Bletchley Park and Stonehenge.

Warwick Castle also had more than 1,000 mentions of the terms "disappointed", "expensive" and "not worth it", with over 500 reviews saying it was "overpriced" and that there was "not much to see".

Despite what the study says, the castle has been a big part of many people's childhood – and adulthood – with its history, entertainment – such as live jousting and falconry – shows, tours, and of course, picnic spots.

There are a number of attractions and shows within the castle during the holidays and on special occasions such as Halloween.

Last October, the castle hosted ghost tours, countless shows, food and drink vendors, mazes and puzzles for all to enjoy.

A spokesperson for Warwick Castle said: "We have not heard of this research, which is not reflected by the feedback on recognised sites where 73 per cent of guests rate the attraction as "excellent" or "very good".

"Our own data from thousands of guests every week tells us they have a wonderful time, with 93 per cent telling us they are satisfied or very satisfied with their visit in 2023.

"Warwick Castle is one of the UK's most-loved family visitor attractions, bringing history vividly to life for all through a range of unique live shows and popular events."

73 per cent of Tripadvisor reviews of the castle are listed as 'excellent' or 'very good' giving it an overall four star rating.

Criticism of the most recent research has rolled in with many describing it as "nonsense" in their experience of visiting the castle.

It has also been awarded Best Visitor Attraction in Warwickshire at the What's On Awards, as well as being shortlisted for the West Midlands Large Visitor Attraction of the year.
