'Work hard to improve' West Brom boss on final third struggle

Tony Mowbray has urged his Albion players to improve in front of goal in their bid to finish in the Championship play-offs.

The Baggies returned from the international break to succumb to stoppage-time defeat to Norwich, where the visitors passed up an opportunity to make hay in the top-six race.

Mowbray's men edged the Canaries in terms of shots and quality of chances created but left empty-handed and remain sixth in the Championship ahead of Saturday lunchtime's crunch clash against the head coach's former side Sunderland.

Albion have scored 15 goals in Mowbray's 12 games at the helm since the 61-year-old's return to the club in mid-January. His appointment was a bid to deliver a more attacking brand and improve on a goal record under former boss Carlos Corberan.

"Every game we play is an opportunity," Mowbray said as Albion could not take advantage of rivals dropping points. "We want to win every game. We felt disappointed at Elland Road and only taking a draw. Definitely at Burnley we felt we should've won.

"At Norwich, throw it in the same bucket. We have to keep producing performance levels and work hard to improve our finishing and when the chances come we have to put it in the net."

Mowbray added: "We played Norwich away ... I genuinely didn't think they got out of their own half for long spells of the match and I couldn't see them scoring a goal.

"Yet they did. We gave a sloppy ball away in midfield, one pass through and he scored."

Albion's tally of 48 goals in 39 league games is the fewest of the top eight. A host of draws means their haul of 13 wins is only narrowly better than the 12 managed by Swansea and Portsmouth in 16th and 17th respectively.

Mowbray said: "It's football - you have to score goals to win games.

"Norwich scored the second most goals in the league this year behind Leeds United.

"It didn't matter to me - but they tried to address the goals against column with how they played, being a bit more pragmatic than they might've done recently.

"But that's irrelevant to me. We have to score. The chances we created we have to score. We created some wonderful chances, their keeper made two or three really special saves.

"We have to put the ball in the net."
