Wolves v Chelsea: Rob Edwards' side in need of momentum ahead of congested February fixtures

The distraction of the January transfer window is over and Wolves are now focused on the final stretch of the season.

There are still four months left of the campaign and Wolves are still in the FA Cup, but relegation from the Premier League seems inevitable and some focus is already turning towards next season and the long-term ambition to be promoted at the first attempt.

The sale of Jorgen Strand Larsen and the signing of Adam Armstrong, who has been given the number nine shirt, was a step in that direction as Wolves prepare for Championship football.

But they have matches to play in the short-term and they must be competitive in every single one. Particularly at Molineux, Wolves cannot afford to throw matches away and damage the relationship with the fans further.

Beating Derby's record low points tally of 11 is a goal, while the club could try to catch Burnley and West Ham to avoid finishing bottom of the table.

But more importantly, Rob Edwards needs to maintain some of the good-feeling with the supporters and carry some momentum into next season, and that means winning a few more games this season.

Chelsea come to town tomorrow and it is the start of a difficult run of fixtures.

After losing back-to-back matches, following the five-game unbeaten run, the Londoners come to Molineux first, before a midweek trip to Nottingham Forest, a potential FA Cup banana skin on their travels against League Town Grimsby, a midweek clash with league leaders Arsenal, away at Crystal Palace and then finishing February at home to Villa on a Friday night in front of the TV cameras.

That is six games in three weeks - before Wolves then start March by welcoming Liverpool to Molineux in another midweek clash.

When building momentum for next season is the goal, Wolves will need to navigate this tough spell carefully to ensure Edwards' good work of late is not undone.

Armstrong will be keen on an instant start tomorrow, as he battles Hwang Hee-chan for that striker role alongside bigger presence Tolu Arokodare.

Hwang may keep his place, however, considering recent displays and Edwards' public defence of the South Korean forward, amid criticism from fans.

New signing Angel Gomes could also be in line for his Wolves debut but he faces a battle to get into the side.

Andre and Joao Gomes were poor by their standards against Bournemouth but are still very talented, while exciting teenager Mateus Mane will likely make up the midfield three.

As a result, both new signings may have to settle for a place on the bench, but they will certainly be needed during this run of fixtures throughout February.

Ladislav Krejci is likely to be back in the mix after illness kept him out of the defeat to Bournemouth and he could come straight back into the starting XI, while Rodrigo Gomes will hope to keep his place at right-wing-back after ousting Jackson Tchatchoua last week.

Toti Gomes is getting closer to his return from a hamstring injury but is not expected to play any part against Chelsea.
