Where will West Brom be shopping in this transfer window and how much will they spend?

The transfer window is yet to open - but plenty of work will be going on behind the scenes at The Hawrhorns.

Albion this week released three senior players along with a host of other young players - with the summer set to be another busy one for Bilkul Football and sporting director Andrew Nestor.

There are areas that need to be addressed in the Baggies squad - as the owners look to build on their impressive permanent signings made so far in their first two transfer windows.

Jonny Drury looks at where Albion will be shopping this summer and how much they could potentially spend.

Free agents

This was the go to market for Albion in the final years of the previous regime, but it was less so last summer.

They had limited success, with only Ousmaine Diakite showing any signs of progress, with Joe Wildsmith's performances questioned and Devante Cole becoming the forgotten man.

They will no doubt be in this pool again this summer, looking to unearth gems from overseas that may well strike the right note.

We have already seen a player linked in Austria, that that is what Albion will be looking for.

Closer to home though, there may well be players out of contract in the top two divisions who cannot be sniffed at. In recent years, they have relied too heavily on obvious names who are looking for a club.

Although moving away from that strategy has been a success, it doesn't mean abandoning it all together is the right thing.

Loan market

This is an area where Albion failed in last season. Although a couple of the loan signings did okay, the majority failed.

That was for one reason or another, whether they were not good enough or it wasn't the right fit.

But Albion took advantage of their loan slots last season, which they had not done for a couple of seasons. And that is the positive to take from it.

With the club in the position it is, I would fully expect them to go and fill the majority of those slots this season.

In terms of a striker, it could well be we see Albion try and go pull another Will Lankshear move out again. I've already said that I would not be against the forward coming back, and being given more of a chance to shine.

But they have to do better this time. Too many didn't work last year and it turns into a bit of a waste.

Spending

There will be permanent moves, and I anticipate Albion will spend again.

It won't be big, we know that, but last summer when we thought no money was available they went and splashed £3m on Mikey Johnston on the deadline.

So there is money to spend, and the owners have worked things so they can invest.

They did again in January with nearly £6m of investment in two players.

That would be the ball park I would anticipate the club to spend. Nothing more than £3m, but more towards what they spent in Isaac Price.

It won't be on every player, but there will certainly be some spending on at least two players, in terms of in the millions.

And they will be looking to identify signings in the mould of Torbjorn Heggem again, for a low fee who can go and flourish.
