West Brom player ratings v Derby with one standout and two marked down in EFL Cup late show

West Brom found themselves dumped out of the EFL Cup opening round yet again - as Derby progressed on penalties.

After dominating large parts of the game it looked as though Aune Heggebo had won it for Albion with his first goal since his summer arrival.

But Joe Ward wrapped in a 96th minute free kick to send the game to penalties - before the Rams prevailed 3-2 on spot kicks.

Joe Wildsmith 6

Nothing to do first half, and hardly anything to do throughout the second half but for a routine save. However, was beaten for the 96th minute free kick, when he may have done better. Denied one penalty in the shoot-out but didn't get close to others.

A big night for the youngster and he more than held his own. Neat on the ball and hardly gave the ball away. Went close to a dream early opener - before two big tackles kept the Derby winger out. Quiet second half but did well.

George Campbell 6

A little slack in possession at times but wanted to get forward when he good and was solid in the air. Almost set Heggebo up for a chance with a lovely first half knock down. Had to deal with an aerial threat late on and did well.

Caleb Taylor 6

A largely good and solid night for Taylor. Good on the ball with only the odd pass going astray. Looked composed and won some key headers late on - but will be disappointed with the free kick he gave away late on.

Callum Styles 7

Impressive from the full back. Constantly looking dangerous down the left, and was decent in winning the ball back. Good volleyed effort in the second half, and went close a second time. Played a big hand in the goal with a superb cross.

Ousmane Diakite 7

Decent from the midfielder coming in for a start. Had an early half chance and a shot over the bar, but it was his work breaking up play that impressed. Also thwarted a late attack down the right before the goal did come.

Alex Mowatt 7

Decent and tidy from Mowatt, who like he did on Saturday tried to get forward when he could. Strung the player together and got through the full 90 minutes before he lashed home his spot kick.

Tom Fellows 7

Looked lively for most of the first period. Dangerous in the first ten minutes with a penalty shout and a blocked shot. In the second still carried a decent threat and almost laid one on a plate for Heggebo.

Isaac Price 8

Inside the first 30 seconds he was sprinting to win balls back and get things moving. Had a big chance early on and everything in the first half went through him. Almost handed Albion the lead at the end of the first period, before he showed superb awareness to nod it down for Heggebo's goal. Such a talent.

Mikey Johnston 7

Had a bit of a point to prove having been left out and then not coming on against Blackburn. Looked like it early on. He was lively, beating the full back and standing up crosses. Lost possession a few times but kept trying to create and was denied by a good save in the second.

Aune Heggebo 7

Quiet early on for the forward - but was then inches away from tapping in his first goal on 21 minutes. But he didn't have to wait too long - as midway through the second half he tucked it home to break his Baggies duck. Super hold up play again. More to come but certainly really good signs from the forward.
