The Black Cats prevailed 1-0 winners thanks to Trai Hume's winner 10 minutes before the interval - a direct free-kick which badly slipped through the grasp of goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith.

See Lewis Cox's Baggies ratings below.

Joe Wildsmith

A horror mistake from the goalkeeper to let Hume's first-half winner slip through. Seemed to go with his right hand to his left but unable to get any purchase on the ball. Terrible error, not his first. Decision time for Mowbray.

Horror 4

Darnell Furlong

Back in the side and could have been the hero on another day. One early chance off the line and later opening somehow blocked. Otherwise not as reliable with the ball as usually.

Chances 5

Kyle Bartley

Part of a defence not overly stretched by visitors and played role in push for late leveller with a couple of headers but not to be. Needs to use aerial threat more.

Push 5

Torbjorn Heggem

Took an early whack to his ankle and limped for some time before coming off. Struggled from that and not his best display, hope knock is not too serious for Tuesday.

Limped 5

Callum Styles

Has set very high standards for himself, not least standing out on return last time, but dipped a touch here against old side. Was not quite able to help out in attacking third.

Dipped 5

Jayson Molumby

Involved plenty but unable to have telling influence. Missed a golden chance before half-time with a poor miscued header when he had to score. Some decent parts but lacked overall like colleagues.

Missed 5

Alex Mowatt

Decent use of the ball and played his part in some sharp moves. Cross laid on Molumby chance. Busy in midfield but another unable to spark Albion in final third. Off on hour.

Unable 5

Mikey Johnston

Countless times he jinked past one or two but shot was either wayward or frustratingly blocked. Familiar lack of composure in final third was especially frustrating here.

Frustrating 6

Grady Diangana

Recalled to side on the right flank and free to drift inside but largely anonymous for most parts. One or two spells with the ball but otherwise inconsistent and lightweight.

Inconsistent 5

Karlan Grant

Sharp as he has been for the the last few games. Not a threat at goal, especially, but was a strong and quick runner and troubled Sunderland's defence. Needs help.

Strong 6

Adam Armstrong

A lot of talk around on-loan striker and was once again on periphery here. Fed off scraps, or team-mates could not get him find him in space between posts.

Lacking 5

Substitutes:

Daryl Dike (for Diangana, 62) Longest appearance since return and got stuck in. Involved and headed decent chance over. 6

Tom Fellows (for Mowatt, 62) Bright half hour from the winger. Several darts down right and some decent delivery. 6

Tammer Bany (for Johnston, 70) The January signing's third game and longest spell. Sharp with and without the ball. Promising. 6

Will Lankshear (for Armstrong, 79) Put himself about and won headers. n/a

Ousmane Diakite (for Heggem, 79) Defensive cover for Heggem late on. n/a

Subs not used: Griffiths, Frabotta, Swift, Cole.
