West Brom player ratings in Middlesbrough defeat: Two 7s and a 5 as Albion suffer last minute heartbreak

Jonny Drury rates the West Brom players after their 3-2 defeat to Middlesbrough.

Josh Griffiths

A few poor kicks in the first period but throughout the game didn't have a mountain of saves to make. Could do nothing about the first goal. Could he have done better for the second? It is hard to say. Did make a top stop late on before the winner.

Conceded 6

Chris Mepham

Had a half chance snap shot early on in the game. Along with the rest of the backline they dealt with everything Boro had to throw at them for large parts. But should have done better to get a foot in, in the run up to the second Boro goal.

Question 6

Nat Phillips

Went pretty unnoticed throughout the game, which was a good thing. Solid, won his headers, looked assured and produced a big tackle late on as Boro were pushing for a winner.

Solid 6

Charlie Taylor

Unfortunate for the own goal and could not adjust his body in time. Did okay in other aspects of the game with no major errors but late on it was Taylor who lost his man and made it far too easy for Boro to net the winner.

Mistake 5

Krystian Bielik

Into midfield, a position he has played before but not for Albion. Did a decent job to be fair, rarely gave the ball away and just did his defensive duties well before coming off just after the hour mark.

Change 6

Callum Styles

Into midfield again and did okay on the ball. Played the Mowatt role when Albion had the ball, trying to shift it and get them moving. Came close to connecting with a cross in the second half.

Okay 6

Isaac Price

Got through plenty of work but looked non-existent in terms of creating for much of the game. Did so well to score from the free kick on the edge of the box and almost curled home a second just moments later.

Goal 6

Albion huddled ahead of kick-off against Boro. They started well but fell 2-0 down before a comeback should have secured a point - before more late anguish. (Photo by Adam Fradgley/West Bromwich Albion FC via Getty Images)placeholder image

Samuel Iling-Junior

One of his better games in an Albion shirt. Flashed in an early shot and fired just wide soon after. Question mark for him and others on the second goal for not getting a tackle in. Final 15 he looked dangerous and it was his cross that led to the equaliser. Showed his worth more than he has done so far this season.

Assist 7

Mikey Johnston

Tough night as Johnston was shifted to a wing back role, where he has rarely played. Did okay, but couldn't get forward as much. As Albion switched system late on was able to get on the ball more and try and create.

Frustrated 6

Karlan Grant

Good again from Grant. Big chance in the first half when he was forced a bit wide and has had other openings, certainly in the second when found by Maja. Also set through one on one but just beaten by the keeper.

Bright 7

Aune Heggebo

Good hold up play and had a huge chance early on. Robbed Boro of the ball but couldn't set himself and was denied when one on one with the goalkeeper. Also almost produced something out of nothing with a turn and snap shot in the second half

Chance 6

Substitutes

64 - Jed Wallace for Bielik 7

Made an impact, brought energy and took his goal well

64 - Josh Maja for Heggebo 7

Biggest impact he has made for some time. Great turn and ball for a Grant chance and played a big hand in the second goal.

great touch and turn for Grant chance, hand in the equaliser, made a differnece, great bit of combination play to set grant

74 - George Campbell for Mepham 5

Poor pass with first touch that almost led to a Boro chance

90 - Daryl Dike for Phillips N/A

Subs not used: Wildsmith, Gilchrist, Whitwell, Deeming, Bostock
