West Brom boss never seen Championship so competitive

Albion head coach Carlos Corberan believes this season's Championship is the tightest he has known.

The Spaniard reckons it is all to play for in the second tier this season as his troops return to action at home to Norwich City, fellow beaten play-off semi-finalists from last term.

Corberan described the form of surprise table-toppers Sunderland as "unbelievable" and said Sheffield United, also on 31 points after a two-point deduction, and Leeds are at a similar level.

The Albion head coach declared his surprise at rock-bottom Queens Park Rangers, whose boss Marti Cifuentes he rates highly and who are five points from safety, but otherwise Corberan feels part of the reason behind a ton of draws for his side is how even the division is.

"We know this year the competition is very equal," Corberan said. "I've never seen this competition with this number of teams in a similar level. Normally you see more gaps in the competition.

"This year I see less gaps, sometimes not many gaps, you can put many in the same place or if you divide the competition then only by a little bit.

"Sunderland is making an unbelievable job. QPR is suffering probably more than they expected with the squad and coach they have.

"After that the other teams are competing in a similar level. Sheffield United would have two more points without the deduction so they are closer to Sunderland's level or Leeds too.

"The other teams we are watching a competition impossible to predict a result. There is a reason why - because there is not much difference between the squads. This makes the competition more exciting, because you cannot predict results."

A run of six draws in a row was recently ended with the victory at Hull last time out. Albion's issue at breaking down opponents has come at The Hawthorns, where it has been three stalemates in a row and just two goals in seven home games this term.

Prior to today home fans have not seen a goal for almost four-and-a-half matches - more than 400 minutes.

Corberan added: "When this happens small details change your position in the table. It's not about the squad level, because it's impossible to predict, it's about managing small detail that makes a lot of difference.

"We won the other day in a game we could have drawn or could have lost. We have drawn some games we could have lost too. We have won games we could have drawn or lost.

"The other game (Hull) they hit the post and headed a big chance over. We could have been talking about something different. I don't reduce the merit of the players. Every game is decided by small details."
