West Brom boss Carlos Corberan 'understands frustration' after latest blank

Albion boss Carlos Corberan admits he understands the frustration of supporters as his goal-shy side fired another blank against Burnley.

The Baggies went eight games without a win and have managed just two home goals in seven games at The Hawthorns this season in the stalemate with the Clarets.

It was Burnley who departed the Black Country the more frustrated given referee Tom Nield's decision to disallow Jaidon Anthony's header on the hour mark for a soft foul on Callum Styles - a decision Corberan thought the official got right.

Albion are now six-and-a-half hours without a home goal after a sixth drawn on the spin in the Championship, albeit a share of the spoils was enough to climb to fifth.

A smattering of boos greeted the half-time and full-time whistle, louder at the latter, as Albion failed to break down the Clarets. Corberan claimed he did not hear the discontent but that he totally understands the feeling.

"I didn't feel frustration, or hear frustration from the fans but I completely understand frustration from the fans," Corberan told the Express & Star.

"I think they have been supporting the team when they are not seeing goals, We want to give better results to the club and to them. It is our responsibility to achieve that, especially my responsibility as coach. My work is to find the solution that makes the team offer better performances and results to the fans."

Albion were better in the first half as John Swift volleyed over early and Mason Holgate's header flashed across goal. Karlan Grant saw two strikes blocked.

But the second period yielded next-to-nothing in terms of clear chances of the hosts.

The head coach felt his side's increased desire to make something happen brought about a unnecessary rotation in positions.

"I liked the team in the first half. In the second half they were better than us. Only in the last 15 minutes did we find the way to balance a little or create or arrive to the last third. In the first 30 minutes in the second half we didn't find a way to create in attack," he added.

"The first half we respected our positions in attack and from these positions we found a way to progress. In the second half we started to rotate and in the rotation we didn't find anything.

"Why rotate? Sometimes you try to find a positive solution but you create more difficulties. For me the positions were not good when we were building attacks. They pressed when we were playing out and we were not good enough to break the press.

"At the moment when we recovered balls in our half we lost the ball. I remember a couple of times losing the ball, Mowey, Dobbin after he beat a player when we had a transition. We didn't use the transitions well."

Away boss Scott Parker was left annoyed with referee Nield's decision to rule out his winger's header but Corberan felt the officials got the call right. Nield's assistant, who had a good view, did not seem to flag an issue.

"What I saw from my perspective was their player's contact with Styles," Corberan said. "I don't know how strong or weak the contact was.

"Sometimes you need VAR to make these decision. Live it looked like a foul, I was surprised they didn't disallow before. I haven't watched on TV."

An irritated Parker disagreed. He said: "It’s disappointing really. With all the people watching the game tonight, there’s probably only one man that didn’t think it was a goal and that was the ref. It was a clear goal, wasn’t it?

“No, he didn’t give an explanation.

“It is what it is now, he’s given the decision. I’m amazed he gave it though because the linesman is literally in line with a much smaller distance, yet the ref has decided to give the decision. I do know the linesman didn’t give it, he didn’t communicate that it was a foul and it clearly wasn’t. It was very, very soft.”
