Walsall's Jamie Jellis back to his "usual self" after difficult period

Walsall midfielder Jamie Jellis says he feels back to his "usual self" after a challenging period battling illness.

Jellis missed the 3-0 defeat at Bradford City in January due to illness and was still feeling the effects on his return.

The 24-year-old has rediscovered his form of late and scored his seventh goal of the season in all competitions during Walsall's 2-0 success at Morecambe on Saturday.

He said: "I am my own biggest critic. When I was wiped out with illness a few weeks back, to try and get myself back up to 100 per cent was a hard period for me because I know what I can do.

"And to not be able to perform to those levels was hard. But I need to learn not to be too hard on myself and know that the energy and that explosiveness is going to come back.

"The last two or three games, I'm really happy with how I'm coming on and getting back to my usual self."

After their five-match winless run, Walsall have got their League Two title charge back on track with successive wins over Chesterfield and Morecambe respectively to move eight points clear at the top.

And Jellis insists there was always belief in the dressing room that Walsall would turn things around.

"When you go 16 unbeaten, nine wins in a row, we hadn't experienced that loss as a team and it was all new for us as a team," he continued.

"But we never thought about the last game. It was always about getting that game out of the way, focusing on the next game and it's going to come.

"We don't listen to any outside noise. We know that we've got enough in that changing room to get the job done basically and we knew that the wins were going to start coming, it was just a matter of when.

"Now we are three unbeaten and hopefully this run continues."
