'Unsurprising': Three reasons why West Brom link to former Newcastle left back makes sense

West Brom have been linked with a host of players during the transfer window - and the next one appears to be left back Jamal Lewis.

The Norwich academy graduate who went on to play around 100 games for the club before a move to Newcastle United - is out of contract having departed the Magpies in this summer following a loan spell at Sao Paulo.

The reports emerged on Tuesday that his former club Norwich, as well as a number of other clubs including Albion were reportedly looking at Lewis.

And the news is unsurprising for a number of reasons.

There is the left back issue that has maybe not been a big issue for Albion in recent years, but it has always been there.

After the departure of Kieran Gibbs, Albion's natural successor was Conor Townsend and in the seasons he spent in the position, he did more than a solid job.

The stand in skipper at the time went on to earn a move to Ipswich Town.

However, during that time there was always a feeling among some that it was an area that Albion needed to improve in.

Last season, Callum Styles stepped into the back four even though he wasn't a recognised left back.

Technically very good, Styles held his own in there but there was an acceptance among many that it maybe isn't his strongest position - and the links to Lewis and other left back point to the fact Albion may now be looking to strengthen in this area.

The other reason is his age. At 27, he is a prime age and Albion have already brought players in, in that age bracket.

And the fact he is a quality player who is a free agent is key. For the signings they have spent money on, and loan players they will no doubt bring in, there is still a place for free agents.

In recent years under the previous ownership, the free agent signings have been poor. But this would represent a really smart acquisition if anything did come to fruition.
