Trouble! Five of sport's greatest tearaways

Kevin Pietersen has once again been the centre of attention this week after being told he is not part of England's plans for the summer.

The controversial South African-born batsman gave a perfectly-timed example of his talent by hitting 355 not out for Surrey in a county championship match against Leicestershire.

But he is far from the only sporting genius who the authorities found too hot to handle.Sports reporter Matthew Maher looks at five others.

1 Diego Maradona

Undoubtedly one of the greatest – if not the greatest – footballer of all time did not have a career short of controversy.

The Argentine's international career came to an abrupt halt eight years later when he failed a drugs test during the 1994 World Cup.

Maradona has always protested his innocence, yet his wild-eyed into-the-camera celebration after scoring against Greece is what sticks in most people's memory.

2 Paul Gascoigne

England manager Glenn Hoddle had given Gascoigne plenty of warnings ahead of the 1998 World Cup in France, telling the 31-year-old he had to get in shape or risk missing the tournament.

Still, when he finally did leave out the team's talisman, it still came as a shock – not least to Gascoigne, who according to Hoddle acted 'like a man possessed' after being told the news.

The Hurricane's exploits off the table now sadly overshadow his brilliance on it. Some stories attached to Higgins, pictured below, are so outlandish they are scarcely believable.

When he punched an official after losing to Steve James in the 1990 World Championships, he was banned for 10 months and never made it back to the top.

4 Shane Warne

The greatest spin bowler of all time had a career of brilliance flecked with the occasional controversy.

In 2003, Warne was banned from cricket for a year after testing positive for banned diuretic on the eve of the World Cup.

Often forthright in his views, he narrowly escaped suspension near the end of his career after a bust-up over the preparation of pitches, while playing for the Rajasthan Royals in the 2011 Indian Premier League.

5 Pete Rose

Holding the all-time record for hits, appearances and at-bats means Rose's reputation as one of baseball's greatest-ever players requires no questioning.

Yet you won't find the former Cincinnati Reds star's name in the sport's much-vaunted Hall of Fame.

Rose agreed to be permanently ineligible from the sport in 1989 amid accusations he had bet on games.

His suspension remains a contentious issue, particularly in light of more serious drug scandals, which have blighted the sport in recent years.
