Tony Mowbray issues 'should be trying' challenge to West Brom regular

Tony Mowbray has called on Albion's Darnell Furlong to find the net more often after his goal at Leeds.

The right-back had not scored since the final day of the regular Championship season last term before his headed equaliser at Elland Road, a first goal in 38 appearances.

It was something of a drought for the experienced Albion stalwart, 29, who bagged five goals last season and has 11 for the club. Furlong might have been a two-goal match-winning hero but he sent a diving header over the top in the second half.

Head coach Mowbray revealed work will continue on trying to work Furlong into better positions to add to his tally. The full-back has a fine leap and his boss believes he should get on the end of more back-post crosses.

"He could've scored another with his head too, he had to go back behind it, but it was one right in the middle of the six-yard box that went right over the top," Mowbray said.

"I've been encouraging Darnell to get in the box, especially with Mikey's (Johnston) talent, when he steps inside on his right foot. How he's not arriving at the back stick all of the time I'm not sure.

"Particularly the games at home where we've had lots of domination. He should be in the box trying to score.

"With respect to Tom Fellows he's not going to tower over anybody and head one in at the back stick, whereas Darnell literally can do that.

"We've been trying to work on Darnell arriving at the back stick and Tom just dropping off to the edge of the box. It nearly worked a couple of times."

Mowbray talked up Furlong after the recent draw at Millwall when the right-back delivered a low cross which was turned in by Joe Bryan for an own goal. His other assists this term have come in the win at Hull in November - Albion's last on the road - and the home success over Preston on New Year's Day.

The former QPR man has often worn the armband for Albion this season, behind Jed Wallace and Kyle Bartley in the club's captain pecking order.
