Q&A: The inside track on Hugo Bueno's loan and his upcoming Wolves chance

Rayan Ait-Nouri's Wolves departure has opened up an opportunity for next season.

Rodrigo Gomes can play on both flanks and will be desperate for more minutes, while Wolves are likely to recruit in a number of areas.

But as one leaves, another returns and Hugo Bueno could be the perfect fit.

The Spaniard enjoyed a season on loan at Eredivisie side Feyenoord and now comes back to Wolves with the intention of staking his claim in the Premier League.

We caught up with Mikos Gouka, journalist for Dutch newspaper AD Sportwereld, to analyse Bueno's loan spell and how he can make an impact at Wolves.

1. What first impression did Hugo Bueno make on his loan?

Bueno made a great debut for Feyenoord. He provided an assist, showed that he had technique and could easily keep up.

The supporters immediately thought that they had seen a great asset at work, but unfortunately for Bueno and Feyenoord, a period with some physical setbacks followed.

2. What were the positives and negatives of his loan and how did injuries impact it?

Feyenoord had Dutch international Quilindschy Hartman on the sidelines with a cruciate ligament injury and the expectation was that he would not join again until February.

The club had brought in Gijs Smal as left back, but he was inexperienced at a top club. With Bueno, they brought in someone who could immediately join at the right level, especially in the Champions League. The three managers, Brian Priske, later interim Pascal Bosschaart and finally Robin van Persie, were always very enthusiastic.

It was annoying that Bueno of course took up the playing time of players who were from Feyenoord themselves and therefore had to be developed in terms of level and financial value and when Hartman was fit, Feyenoord suddenly had three fully-fledged left backs.

Hartman said that there was one player too many for that position and that Smal and Bueno thought so too.

Bueno has been valuable, that much is clear. His greatest achievement was that cross in San Siro against Milan, from which Carranza scored and Feyenoord went through in the Champions League.

But there were also many matches that he had to miss due to injuries. That was logical, he had not played much before coming to Rotterdam. But if he had not been injured he would have played everything for the club, that is his level.

3. How did he cope with Champions League football and playing at left-back?

Bueno played his best matches in the Champions League. He has technique and makes the right choices under high pressure. He can also play as a wing-back or purely as a full-back.

He played best as a left back, but with the freedom to join the attack. That goal against Milan by Carranza was after Bueno was playing hanging on the left. He can simply cover the entire flank.

4. Overall, how successful was the loan for the player and club?

I would say a seven. He has the quality, but Feyenoord had a difficult season as a club with a fired coach and dropping out too quickly for the title fight with Ajax and PSV. Bueno missed too many matches due to injuries.

5. Is he capable of stepping up to the Premier League as a first choice starter?

With Ait Nouri gone and with his experience and attacking qualities, he seems to me to be of Premier League level without too many problems.

Although the competition in England is always fierce, he will have to show that he is top fit and can play three matches a week.

6. Would Feyenoord want Bueno back if there was the opportunity?

Feyenoord definitely wants to keep him. Van Persie openly said that. Especially because Hartman does not want to sign a new contract and will leave.
