Morgan Rogers backed for England starting role after starring in Aston Villa's FA Cup triumph

Emi Buendia has backed Morgan Rogers to win his battle for an England starting place after the midfielder was Villa’s FA Cup match-winner at Tottenham.

Rogers and Buendia both scored again against Spurs as Unai Emery’s team produced a repeat of October’s 2-1 Premier League win in Saturday’s third round tie.

It was Villa’s 19th win in their last 23 matches in all competitions and Rogers is their top scorer after netting his eighth of the season.

The Halesowen-born 23-year-old is targeting a big second half of the campaign as he looks to secure a place in England's starting XI at the World Cup, amid competition from his childhood friend and Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham.

Buendia believes Rogers should get the nod if he keeps performing at his current level.

He said: “Morgan is a top player. He is doing well. He has a lot of potential as well so he needs to keep going.

“I think, for me, he has to play in the starting XI for England. He has to keep working hard.”

Buendia, who netted himself for the sixth time this season when he opened the scoring midway through the first half, believes Saturday’s win demonstrated the mentality of Emery’s team.

The match was Villa’s fourth in London in the space of a fortnight and came less than 72 hours after a 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace.

But they ended up deserved winners and Buendia is confident they have the strength in depth to keep challenging on three fronts this season.

Villa are not back in action until they host Everton in the Premier League on Sunday.

Buendia said: “I think we are playing really good football. We know the quality we have as a team and a squad.

“What we are doing together, we are really strong. We can have changes in the starting XI and the players who come from the bench, everyone tries to help.

“We are only going one way together. This is why we are playing so well and getting good results. We have to keep going, keep working and believing in ourselves.”

Rogers’ goal on the stroke of half-time appeared to have Villa cruising toward a comfortable victory but they were made to battle after Wilson Odobert pulled one back for Tottenham in the second half.

Buendia, who was denied a second goal when Pedro Porro cleared off the line, continued: “It has been a hard month, with a lot of trips, many of them to London.

“The mentality of this team to play, rest, train and repeat is really good. We are showing good character, patience on the pitch.

“Then I think we play some really good football. We fought when we needed to in the second half for the win. It's a nice time now, we can rest and then prepare because it is going to be hard against Everton.”
