EMI MARTINEZ

Was equal to Haaland’s first half effort and then commanded his box impressively in the second half. Much more sure-handed than of late.

Unbeaten: 7

MATTY CASH

Continued his strong start to the season with another excellent goal. A happy accident, as the corner wasn’t actually meant for him.

Goal: 8

EZRI KONSA

Always in the right place at the right time. In the perfect position to clear in the closing stages just when Haaland was ready to head home.

Imperious: 8

PAU TORRES

Made a vital intervention to clear Savinho’s strike over the bar from inside his own six-yard box. Looks a player transformed from two months ago.

Strong: 7

LUCAS DIGNE

Involved in the winning goal for the second straight weekend. Strong defensively and a nuisance going forward.

Busy: 7

BOUBACAR KAMARA

Helped Villa dominate the midfield for much of the first half and then played a key defensive role in the second half.

Steady: 7

AMADOU ONANA

Awarded man-of-the-match by the broadcasters and you couldn’t argue. Summed up Villa’s character when he blocked with his face.

Excellent: 8

JOHN MCGINN

Came close to adding a second with a shot which was deflected just wide by a diving John Stones. Covered lots of ground, as usual.

Captain: 7

MORGAN ROGERSWas close to unplayable at times in the first half and helped drive Villa forward. Not quite so good in the second half but kept running.

Improving: 7

EMI BUENDIA

Had started really impressively on the left and set-up the goal. Villa will hope the injury is not too serious for a player full of confidence.

Assist: 6

OLLIE WATKINS

No shortage of effort but the moment in the second half when he could not quite reach Ross Barkley’s through ball rather summed up his season so far.

Frustrated: 6

SUBSTITUTES

Jadon Sancho 6 (for Buendia, 29), Ross Barkley 7 (for McGinn, 74), Evann Guessand 6 (for Sancho, 74), Ian Maatsen (for Digne, 86), Donyell Malen (for Watkins, 86) Subs not used: Lindelof, Mings, Bogarde, Bizot (gk).
