"It's something we need to do" - Wolves boss on summer plans to address leadership concerns

Rob Edwards admits Wolves will need to recruit more leaders in the summer as part of their squad rebuild.

The captaincy has been an issue for some time, with Wolves losing their skipper for four consecutive summers and having no obvious choice to lead the team.

Club captain Toti Gomes has been sidelined for two months through injury and Jose Sa, Matt Doherty and Andre have all captained the team recently.

Although Edwards believes the culture in the group is more important than the individual wearing the armband, he does admit it is an area Wolves must address in the summer ahead of their expected relegation to the Championship.

"Believe it or not, that's not the most important thing to me," Edwards said when asked about switching the captaincy recently.

"I'd love a team of leaders. It'd be great to have a settled one, but it's not the most important thing. It's not the be all and end all to me.

"Clearly with our recruitment and what we'll look for going into the summer, will be more leaders and people that are more natural doing that. I think that's something that's really important to me and to us as a football club as well, it's something we need to do.

"It's (captaincy change) has been forced with Jose missing the game and we made a different decision on who has it, but I don't make a big thing of it and I've said that before when I've been at other clubs as well. I've been quite consistent with that.

"But what I am consistent with as well is I want a team, I want a group of people that can lead the dressing room. I think that's really important.

"When I've been part of successful teams, either as a head coach or as a player, the dressing room almost drives things.

"Of course, it comes from me, but it also comes from within and we're still working on that.

"I'm definitely seeing improvements with the group and I think we can see that on the pitch as well, there's more of a fight and a togetherness there, but lots of work to do."

Wolves are expected to have a busy summer with a high turnover of players and Edwards says he is still working on implementing the identity, as plans come together for what Wolves will look like next season.

"We've got a really good idea," Edwards said.

"I think everyone's got an ideal way of how they want the team to look and how they want the team to play and the squad's dynamic, but that takes time. We've had one window where we've been able to have quite a shake-up and clearly there's going to be more needed in the summer.

"There's a lot of work going on now. There'll be loads of conversations between now and the end of the season and obviously into the summer to make sure that we're in a good place with the group of players that we have, that can then go and play the way we want to try and play and win football matches as well. So there'll be a heck of a lot of work going on.

"Then with the playing group that we've got right now, of course there's elements of things that are non-negotiable, whatever way we're going to try and play.

"There'll be things now that we'll be working on that will be forever, but what we're having to do at the moment, especially in the Premier League, is try and find a consistent way of working.

"But also we're having to adapt a lot game to game because each team provides such a different test and a really tough challenge for us as well.

"It'd be great to get to a point where we can be say, 'that is us', we know exactly what we're going to be and then just work at that moving forward, and that'll be the plan."
