"I feel like I deserved it" - Wolves attacker on his lively full debut
Mateus Mane believes he earned his first Wolves start and is determined to keep his place ahead of his senior colleagues.
The 18-year-old forward was given his full debut by Rob Edwards at Anfield and the confident teenager put in a lively attacking display.
Mane insists he deserved that chance and he is ready to cement his place in the side.
"It felt good getting my first start in the Premier League," Mane told the Express & Star.
"I feel like I deserved it, I've worked hard in training and when I came on to play in every game. I feel like I deserved it.
"I just believe in myself, I've confidence in myself that I deserve to be here.
"This is where I want to be, I'm here and I want to take people's places.
"Of course at first there were a lot of nerves, but then after a bit you realise this is where you want to play, this is where you want to be, so nerves just went away."
Mane added: "I found out the day before in a meeting.
"When I found out I was starting, I was buzzing and told my family and to my agent and just felt confident, felt like I deserved it."
Mane was first promoted to the first team towards the end of last season under Vitor Pereira but after signing his first professional deal he was never given an opportunity to play.
Edwards has given him more trust off the bench, followed by this first start, and Mane is ready to take advantage of his opportunity.
He said: "Of course, it can be a bit frustrating, working hard in training and getting told different things.
"But I just kept working, head down, not letting that get into me.
"I kept working and working, a new manager came in, he trusted me and now I'm getting what I deserve in game time.
"It's been good, it's changed a lot.
"In training, it's changed, everything's changed around the building.
"He pushes us every day to get the best out of us, I feel like we just need to help him get a win soon.
"Of course it's been a bit down, but we work hard every day in training, out of training, in the gym to try and get a win and I feel like that's coming very soon.
"I feel like we need to start the game how we end the game, because when we end the game we end very well.
"When we concede one not let that get to us, just keep our head up, keep going, fight and try and get goals."
Wolves fans have also taken quickly to Mane, singing his name at matches and appreciating the fearless way he is approaching games while the rest of the team struggles.
He said: "It's been good, I like hearing my name getting sung, it gives me more confidence to keep going every day and try and get a win for the fans.
"I'm young now, but when I was younger I always played with older people, 1v1, that's what I love to do, get at players.
"Whoever is in front of me, I'm not scared, I just go and drive at him.
"I'm just going to work hard every day, keep doing what I'm doing and hopefully that first goal comes."
