'Hopefully only a couple of days' - Jamille Matt pushing to be fit for Walsall

Jamille Matt says he will be pushing to be fit when Walsall host Fleetwood Town at Bescot on Sunday.

The Walsall captain was forced off with a knee problem in the 31st-minute of the Saddlers' 2-0 defeat at Cambridge United on New Year's Day.

Matt, who was making his eighth consecutive start in the league for Walsall, initially attempted to soldier on after picking up the knock early on.

The 36-year-old is still hopeful that he will be fit to face his former club Fleetwood, as Walsall look to respond to a run of back-to-back defeats.

"I've had a little bit of a tweak, it's just something I couldn't get going again with my knee," Matt revealed.

"I'm hoping it's nothing too bad, but I couldn't run as freely as I wanted to, which was frustrating because I was feeling good up until that point.

"It was too soon to settle down but I'm hoping it's only a couple of days."

Matt was sporting heavy strapping on his knee from the start of the game, but explained that it was initially applied to protect a cut.

"I had a little cut on my knee that started to bleed in the warm-up so I had to cover over it," he added.

"It was just there to try and help when I felt my knee, but it obviously didn't help to the extent I needed it to."

Matt wants success with Walsall - regardless of his role

Matt ended his nine-month goal drought in League Two when he scored the winning goal in a 1-0 triumph over Crewe Alexandra on Boxing Day.

An injury-hit pre-season contributed to Matt spending the early part of the season somewhat on the fringes.

He played just 138 minutes across the first 16 games in League Two, before making his first league start in a 2-0 win at Harrogate Town on November 22 in the wake of Aaron Pressley's hamstring injury.

Since, Matt has started every game in the league and has even retained his place in the XI since Pressley returned from his spell on the side lines.

Yet his sole focus is on the team and Matt is eager to achieve success with Walsall regardless of his role.

"I feel like I've started to get going a little, but I've touched on it before when I wasn't getting the game time, that I'm here to help the team in whatever capacity is needed," he continued.

"It's not about myself, it's about the whole group and the team being successful. I'm just one player as part of that squad and I'm going to help the team wherever possible."
