"He really does care" - Rob Edwards set for selection decision on struggling striker

Rob Edwards says he could take Jorgen Strand Larsen out of the firing line as he insists the forward desperately cares about getting it right at Wolves.

The striker has struggled for form this season and has been heavily criticised by supporters, which was not helped by his penalty miss against Brentford.

West Ham have since made an early enquiry about signing him in January, while other clubs are also interested, and Edwards says he may drop the forward but does not question his commitment.

"There's a couple of ways to think about it," Edwards said when asked whether Larsen needs to be taken out of the firing line.

"We'll try and pick what we see is the right team to go and get a result at Liverpool, which is obviously a really difficult challenge.

"He's working really hard every day in training and we see everyone every day. But there's competition around as well so we'll try and select the right person for the job.

"Clearly he's not at his absolute best but that's not down to a work rate thing, it's not a work ethic, it's not an attitude thing.

"He really does care and I need to stress that. He cares, he is trying but some things haven't gone his way and obviously then that snowballs and then because of results there's a bigger thing made of it I think.

"But what we'll try and do is pick the right team for the right game."

On the fan criticism, Edwards added: "It is difficult for him, but he's battling on. His attitude's been really good around the place here. He's working hard.

"A couple of the staff members have spoken to him. I'm not always going to do that every single day, but a couple of the guys have spoken to him and had conversations with him as well. He's got to work his way through."

Meanwhile, the head coach says it came as not surprise to him to see the size of the challenge at Wolves as they struggle at the bottom of the Premier League.

“I knew it was going to be really difficult, really challenging, and obviously the results haven’t turned and that’s really tough and frustrating, but we are working extremely hard," Edwards said.

“We’re seeing levels improving in training, we are seeing things that we want to see on a more regular basis, a bit more consistency, and we’ve had a lot of quite tight games, but then moments have affected us and we’ve come off the wrong end of the results.

“But it’s not surprising how difficult the job is, we knew the situation that we were coming into, but it’s just making us work even harder to try and turn this around. The staff are working around the clock to try and make sure we can do that.”
