The under-21s took on the League One side on Tuesday evening in the group stage of the Bristol Street Motors Trophy.

But Wrexham's experience paid off with a comfortable 3-0 win in front of just under 4,000 fans.

Pond, who captained the side, hopes the team's up-and-coming stars can learn from this experience despite the result.

"It's not the result we wanted but I think we always knew it would be tough coming here," Pond told the Express & Star.

"Wrexham are right at the top of League One and their squad speaks for itself.

"They have a lot of experience in their team and we knew it was always going to be tough.

"But I thought towards the end we dug in relatively well and kept the scoreline respectable enough in the end.

"There is lots of learning and experience there for the younger lads.

"We have young lads out there and this is the football we want to come into.

"It's all about taking the experience and learning off their players, what they do and understanding what it takes to get there. Hopefully some of us can go on to play at this sort of level and beyond."

Pond and his fellow defenders came up against plenty of experienced forwards, including Wrexham's star man and goalscorer Paul Mullin, as well as former Wolves forward Steven Fletcher.

"These are the sort of games I want to be playing in, against experienced players," Pond added.

"Steven Fletcher came on at the end and I remember watching him when I was a kid.

"There was definitely lots of experience out there and it's something I can take with me to keep moving forward."
