The Sun's Dean Scoggins said Wolves deserved their win, which came from Jose Bosingwa's fifth minute own goal.

"Wolves were hungrier, worked harder and showed more togetherness than a side that looked like they would swagger their way to another title earlier in the season.

"Frank Lampard was anonymous, John Terry wasteful in possession, Ashley Cole awful and Didier Drogba outmuscled. And as for Ramires, Brazil must be struggling in midfield for him to get capped.

"But credit must go to Wolves who did exactly what was required. Home fans have been used to seeing early goals - usually against their team. This time McCarthy's side were rewarded for their frenetic start."

"There were certainly no passengers in the Wolves team. McCarthy's players worked tirelessly, pressing Chelsea all over the pitch and chasing lost causes."

The Daily Telegraph's Jason Burt wrote: "Against the Wolves Gold, (Chelsea) were the Fool's Gold and club owner Roman Abramovich will not want to view much more of this, his millions invested in a team that appears paralysed in a disbelieving torpor, unable to rouse itself and offering little but a poverty of ideas.

"This is a team out of sorts, ill at ease, unhappy, angry. This was a new low — and a real high for Wolves, who propelled themselves not just off the foot of the table but out of the bottom three and did so at the expense of Aston Villa. Heigh ho, silver lining indeed for the Wolverhampton Wanderers faithful. But not many Chelsea players will have heard that."
