Wolves v Arsenal preview: Molineux men gunning for another high-profile scalp

Matt Doherty insists Wolves still have plenty to play for as they host title challengers Arsenal tonight.

With six games remaining this season and the European dream likely beyond them, Wolves are aiming to overcome a slump that has seen them go winless in their last five fixtures.

But they face a stern test at Molineux as Arsenal arrive hoping to overcome a small dip in form of their own and stay in the race for the title.

Ahead of taking on the Gunners, Doherty says Wolves are still fighting for points and will not rest on their laurels.

“I think that’s a myth, I don’t know if that has actually happened for anyone mentally,” Doherty said when asked about Wolves players already thinking about their holidays.

“I don’t know of any club, or any management staff that would ever allow that.

“I know some results at the end of the season can make people think that but that’s never the case.

“You’re always playing for something, whether it’s finishing in a certain position to earn more points and more financial incentives, we’re always playing for something.

“Every point matters – every position you finish in the league matters to us.

“I think our character is never in question. If it was in question we would never be near the place we are.

“Character, mentality, all that should be a given really – a basic thing you should always have on the pitch.

“And obviously if you have enough quality then you’ll win games.

“Obviously we’ve had a lot of injuries but a few of the lads are coming back now and we can see the difference they make straight away.

“I think we’ve done pretty well considering the players we’ve had missing.”

Arsenal have beaten Wolves in the last five meetings between the two teams, but Wolves did do the league double over them in the 2020/21 season.

This season, Wolves have done the double over Spurs and Chelsea, while also beating Manchester City.

Despite the recent record against Arsenal, Doherty believes Mikel Arteta’s side are in for a tough night under the Molineux lights.

“Wolves have always taken scalps, we’ve taken Chelsea twice this season, we’ve taken Man City, Spurs twice,” he said.

“For as long as I can remember we’ve always been capable of doing stuff like that. They’re going for the title but it’s not going to be easy for them, they won’t fancy that.

“It’s obviously going to be a big game, they still have a lot to play for. It will be another tough game for them.”

After rejoining Wolves in the summer, Doherty has had limited minutes due to the form of Nelson Semedo.

He has recently played on the left and has started the last three games, but the experienced defender wants more.

He added: “Yeah, I’m frustrated. but only frustrating in terms of I haven’t played in my actual position all that much, whether that’s just coming on or starting.

“I always seem to play on the left – which is fine – I’ve played there loads of times even years ago I was playing left-back for Wolves.

“Obviously, you want to make an impact in your best position.

“It’s fine, I don’t want to sound like I’m unhappy or anything like that. I understand Nelson is having a great season – he could even be player of the season for us, so I get it.”
