Wolves set for summer revamp of goalkeeper department
Wolves are set to make lots of changes to the squad this summer.
Wolves are anticipating a revamp of their goalkeeper department this summer, the Express & Star understands.
Following relegation to the Championship, a number of Wolves players will depart the club this summer, as Rob Edwards rebuilds the squad for a promotion push.
The club’s hierarchy have already committed to bringing in several fresh faces and it is understood change is likely among the club’s goalkeepers.
Jose Sa, who signed for Wolves in 2021 and has made 170 appearances for the club, is expected to be sold this summer.
He has one year left on his contract, with the option to extend it by a further 12 months, but is likely to have interest from other clubs.
Nottingham Forest had a £1.5million bid rejected in January and the Gestifute client - who is going to the World Cup with Portugal - is expected to leave Wolves.
The goalkeeper appeared to say goodbye to Wolves fans following the final day draw at Burnley, while after the game Edwards said of Sa: “Potentially that's his last game now, we'll see.”
Sam Johnstone is also likely to leave, despite having two years left on his Wolves deal with the option to extend to 2029.
The former England international arrived at Molineux two years ago and has been in and out of the team, making just 27 appearances in total for the club.
He last played for Wolves on March 6 and last played in the Premier League on December 13.
Johnstone was not in the squad for Wolves’ final eight games after being ruled out with a shoulder issue and the goalkeeper, who is understood to be a high earner at Wolves, is expected to depart this summer.
As it stands, current third choice Dan Bentley is the most likely shot-stopper to stay at Wolves for next season.
The 32-year-old has extensive Championship experience with 260 second tier appearances during spells at Bristol City and Brentford, while he is also an important leader in the dressing room.
Bentley has one year left on his Wolves deal, with the option of a further year.
Regardless of which goalkeeper does stay, Wolves are expected to sign a new number one this summer.
Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, who spent the second half of the season on loan at Championship promotion chasers Millwall, is one that Wolves have previously monitored but it remains to be seen if they will make a move amid his reported £8million valuation.
