Wolves pre-season tour diary: Training and interviews on day three

Day three of Liam Keen’s pre-season tour diary.

As the Portuguese weather heats up, it was another training day for me on Wednesday.

Fortunately, as the sun was beating down, I was watching the Wolves players train rather than doing any physical exercise myself!

I'd managed to get some down time late on Tuesday evening to watch Spain beat France in the World Cup semi-finals, before getting back to my apartment to do some late night preparation for work the following day.

I was back out to the training ground first thing and with not a cloud in sight, most onlookers were rushing for the shade again and I was no different.

After the team did double sessions on Tuesday, it meant they had a slightly lighter day on Wednesday, but from my perspective it still looked fairly intense.

The players had a slower start with some stretching and light jogging, with much less running than the day before, but then got stuck into some small-sided games in teams, to get the competitive juices flowing.

That was followed by some game-like scenarios focused on attacking phases of play, using the wide players and creating overloads.

There was less tactical instruction in comparison to Tuesday, but it was still technical and required focus.

The club's hierarchy were watching on from the sidelines, including chairman Nathan Shi, who has flown out to Portugal to be around the squad and Cesar Peixoto.

After training ended I grabbed a quick interview with Toti Gomes, who was as engaging and thoughtful as he always is, with questions focused around training, his first impressions of Peixoto and the clubs new signings Kieran Trippier, Raul Jimenez and Rafiki Said.

As I left the private area at Wolves' training ground and walked back towards my car and into the area occupied by the public, a few kids that managed to get a glimpse of training from a distance asked me if I was a player - which would mean Wolves were in a desperate position if that was true!

With a slight (undeserved) ego boost, I headed back to my apartment to run through my day's work and get prepared for more interviews in the coming days.

Of course, it was then time to head out and watch the huge semi-final of England against Argentina with plenty of nerves and a little bit of liquid courage to help me get through the game.
