Wolves fan groups joined forces late last week after the club revealed a hike of 17 per cent in some prices, and up to 176 per cent for some children, for next season.

Their petition has already gathered more than 8,000 signatures as Wolves 1877 Supporters Trust claimed they are “one step closer to delivering every single signature to the club.”

During a visit to the Express & Star’s offices in Wolverhampton on Friday, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of the incoming football governance bill – which has been paused as a result of the snap general election – to monitoring fans’ concerns.

“Football clubs should work hard, and I’m sure do work very hard to make sure watching football is as affordable as possible for fans, which are ultimately the lifeblood of the support,” Sunak told the Express & Star. “That’s why we said we would bring a football regulator in, because we need to make sure fans are at the heart of the sport that I grew up loving, and we saw some things happening where that wasn’t the case.

“The regulator’s job is to make sure that football is something that is anchored in fans and in local communities, which is why it has been welcomed across the country.”

Asked whether the regulator should also be able to control pricing, the PM added: “Those conversations are ongoing, the regulator is mainly to make sure that fans are protected and we have fan-led football.

“That is predominantly around the area of things like stadiums, kits, the ownership of clubs, making sure the clubs have a sustainable future, people joining breakaway leagues.”
