Wolves' Kenny Jackett: Our play better than results

Kenny Jackett is challenging Wolves to meet yet another fired-up assault on his team's promotion-favourites tag with a result to match their recent football.

In-form Preston head for Molineux on Saturday buoyed by 10 wins and just one defeat from their last 16 games – and the chance to overhaul Jackett's side with victory.

It is a run of results which contrasts with Wolves' recent record of one win in seven, but the Molineux head coach feels that victory over Crewe does not tell the whole story.

"I feel we have dominated sides in recent weeks, since the Crewe game and over the Christmas period," insists Jackett. "We have probably played better football than we have done all season without really having the fire up front to put sides away.

"Then as the game goes on you can see everybody gets a little bit nervous and the opposition grow in confidence. Friday night (the 1-0 loss at Gillingham) was a prime example of that. Tranmere, Orient...it has been a similar pattern.

"We have done very well up to the box and we haven't really been able to pull the trigger and put teams away.

"I do want to dominate possession, I do want to pass out from the back, I do want to play – but obviously you have to turn that into winning performances as well, because otherwise confidence can seep away.

"It is up and around that box that we do need to improve."

Jackett's comments underscore his priority target in the January transfer window of a striker, but as yet he remains empty-handed.

Wolves are feeling the heat for the first time in the League One promotion chase having been knocked out of the top two when Orient won at Shrewsbury.

Jackett added: "In terms of recent results, it is not promotion form. So we know what we have to do about it.

"But I also feel that recent performances have been very good in several of the departments of the team and we can capitalise on that and build on it.

"If we do that and then at the right time find the right combination and the right balance, the players that we have will be able to go forward and make the difference. We can, looking forward, put ourselves where we want to be, which is in the Championship."
