Wolves debrief: Organised and creative side do the business against Preston

Liam Keen takes another look at Wolves’ win over Preston.

A win at Preston was just the tonic Wolves needed after some opening day frustration.

Cesar Peixoto and his side will face sterner tests this season, but their responsibility was to perform and get a result at Deepdale.

We take another look at that victory and the improvement Wolves made.

Organised

Wolves were far too open against Blackburn, while individual mistakes and a general lack of composure meant they looked vulnerable during every attack.

Including the goalkeeper and defence, only one of the back five that started against Blackburn also started against Preston, after Dan Bentley left the club and Kieran Trippier and Yerson Mosquera picked up injuries.

The inclusion of Jose Sa and Hugo Bueno was welcomed by fans, but starts for Jackson Tchatchoua and Nasser Djiga caused some concern.

However, all four of them - alongside Toti Gomes - contributed to an organised defensive display.

Sa was aggressive coming for crosses and marshalled his box, while the back four controlled Preston’s forwards with ease and were rarely troubled.

They were good on the ball, too, and avoided any big individual mistakes.

Toti made eight clearances alone, while the defence were also helped by those in front of them as Marshall Munetsi blocked five shots, while the whole team blocked seven in total.

The debate rages on over which centre-backs should play, with Santi Bueno and Ladislav Krejci watching on, but Wolves’ defence did themselves justice at Deepdale.

Creative

Throughout pre-season and the early fixtures of the season, scoring goals has not seemed to be a problem.

Fer Lopez has been the obvious star of late and his two goals against Preston were impressive.

The first, in particular, showed a player who has adapted much better to the physicality of English football, while he has the technical quality to hurt teams.

Wolves’ creativity is largely coming through Lopez, but the second goal shows a team with quality in plenty of areas.

Andre’s ball out wide to Adam Armstrong got the team moving forward and his one-two with Raul Jimenez was simple but effective, before he finished with ease.

It was easy on the eye and the weight of Jimenez’s pass was excellent.

Wolves’ wingers Rodrigo Gomes and Mateus Mane were also better in the second half and, as the team’s confidence grew, they were more direct and dangerous.

However, it is still clear that Wolves must recruit in that department before the transfer window closes in a weeks’ time, to give more pace and competition.

Impact

Setting the team up with the correct tactics and personnel - as well as making the right decisions from the bench - are down to the manager.

Against Preston the head coach got it right with his initial selection and slight tweak in tactics.

Knowing that the hosts liked to go long with the ball, Wolves did not press as aggressively in order to avoid being bypassed in the way Blackburn were able to.

Wolves were set up to have more control and they used the ball well.

Later in the game, when Wolves needed to ensure they got the second goal and killed the match, Peixoto was forward-thinking in his substitutions and his decisions proved to be the right ones when Armstrong scored.

Tommy Doyle also added energy, while Jordan James got some much-needed minutes.

The new signing made the bench look stronger, too, although Wolves still need some added quality in the final week of the transfer window.
