Southport-born Jones, who has one England under-21 cap, also qualifies for Wales through his dad who was born in north Wales.

But the 26-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of the season, has previously resisted approaches to play for Wales because he said he didn't feel Welsh.

However, the new Wales coach is weighing up a fresh approach for the playmaker in the hope he may have changed his mind, after failing to break through in the England set-up.

Speed said: "It's important we look at all options. I would would consider asking him to play for Wales."

Wolves already boast three Wales internationals - goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey, midfielder David Edwards and striker Sam Vokes.

Now Speed wants Jones' Molineux team-mates to persuade him to look into the idea.

The Wales boss said: "I know Jones was asked a few years ago about his availability and wanted to keep his options open.

"We have players at Wolves, so I'm sure we can try to chat to him. It's a very personal and big decision in his career.

"But I'm sure we'll be exploring all of the avenues."

Jones was approached by the Football Association of Wales when he was a teenager at Manchester United during Mark Hughes' time in charge of the national team.

The former United youth team captain also revealed Wales and United legend Ryan Giggs tried to persuade him to play for Wales.

But Jones wanted to wait to see if he had an international future with England as he "considered himself an Englishman."

His one England Under-21 cap was as a substitute in a 2-2 draw in Sweden in March 2004.

Wales' next game is away to the Republic of Ireland in the Carling Nations Cup on February 8, before they host England in a UEFA 2012 qualifier on March 26.

Speed has also asked Fulham's Simon Davies to reconsider his decision to quit international football.

Wolves' Welsh trio forms part of an 13-strong international contingent.

The squad boast Republic quartet Kevin Doyle, Kevin Foley, Stephen Hunt and Andy Keogh, Scotland pair Christophe Berra and Steven Fletcher, Serbia's Nenad Milijas, Algeria's Adlene Guedioura, Marcus Hahnemann from the United States and Johnny Gorman from Northern Ireland.
