The Molineux men are long-standing admirers of the 20-year-old, who made a big impact from the bench as Boro booked a place in the quarter-final of the FA Cup with a win against Sheffield United.

Despite his performance last night Johnson is understood to be available if he can be guaranteed first team football.

And Kightly's injury is sure to prompt at least an enquiry from Mick McCarthy – who would face competition from a raft of Championship clubs.

Sheffield Wednesday, Leicester and Watford – where he spent a succesful loan spell earlier this season – are also in the hunt.

So far McCarthy has tried strikers Stephen Elliott, Jay Bothroyd and Andy Keogh on the right of midfield but none has been able to come close to Kightly's impact.

Wolves tried to sign Johnson last season but the Sunderland-born midfielder wanted to stay close to his family and chose to join Leeds instead.

But he proved his worth at Watford earlier in the season, catching the eye in his 11 starts.
