Adam Hammill's loan to Huddersfield until January was Wolves' only piece of deadline day business after they decided against a move for a midfielder.

Wolves will eventually bring in around £27m from the sales of Steven Fletcher, Matt Jarvis and Michael Kightly. Solbakken claimed the seven players he recruited cost less than fellow relegated club Blackburn splashed on one player – the £8m on Huddersfield hotshot Jordan Rhodes.

"Some clubs have spent very big to be among the top two or top six," he said.

"Blackburn showed that with the deal for Rhodes – they spent more money on one player than we spent on all seven players we've brought in.

"But we've managed to do some sensible deals and I hope it will work out."

Wolves scouted Rhodes but Solbakken revealed his price tag was beyond what they were willing to pay.

"We weren't close to competing at that level," he said.

Solbakken admitted Wolves were never likely to spend big, despite the departures of Fletcher and Jarvis.

"We were very pressurised this window with Kightly, Fletcher and Jarvis leaving so late," he said. "We're certainly on the plus side when it comes to transfers."

* Cardiff signed West Ham striker Nicky Maynard on a three-year deal last night and he could be considered for the squad to face Wolves tomorrow.
