'We have a top squad' - Fer Lopez backs Wolves to fight for the title
Fer Lopez spoke to the Express & Star after the win over Preston.
Fer Lopez believes Wolves are capable of fighting for the Championship title this season after their win at Preston.
The Spaniard netted either side of a good team move finished off by Adam Armstrong in the 3-1 victory at Deepdale, which banished some of the concerns following the 2-2 draw with Blackburn at Molineux.
Lopez was particularly complimentary of the entire squad’s contribution as they picked up a first Championship win of the season.
When asked if Wolves can take confidence from the performance and result, Lopez said: “A lot, especially in the way we want to play.
“If we are confident, if we are winning games, we can play a lot more proper football.
“I think that the difference today was also the bench. We bring players like Armstrong, nearly 100 goals, Tommy, Bouba, JJ, Wolfe, every Premier League player, most of them.
“It was very good and I think we have a top squad to fight for winning the league.”
Lopez has been one of Wolves’ stand-out performers in the early stages of the season, having scored against Port Vale in the Carabao Cup and now following it up with a brace against Preston.
The player is hoping to do all of his talking on the pitch this season and help Wolves to have a successful campaign.
“I don't like to be the main centre of attention, I like to be a bit more like a calm, chill guy,” Lopez said.
“I just like to play football, but that thing of being the main man and stuff, I like to be it on the pitch, but off the pitch I prefer other players to be it, like Raul, Toti, Trippier the captains and the older players.
“I like to be a lot more on the side and just on the pitch I want to be the main man.
“But I’m not the main man - I want to be one of the important guys on the pitch.
“Not off the pitch, more on the pitch, but the main man are the captains.”
The attacker was signed from Celta Vigo last summer and returned to his old club on loan for the second half of last season after struggling to adapt to English football.
But he has returned ready to make an impact in the second tier and was pleased with his decision to leave on loan.
He added: “It was the best decision I could have made, especially to that club, to Celta, because I knew I was going to play.
“I went there to Spain losing money. There were some teams that (could have) paid me double, but I think that at this age, playing football is the most important thing, so I think it was the best decision I could have made.
“I think it shows now. I'm quicker, I'm stronger, I'm more prepared for football, because the only thing I needed was minutes.
“Before this season, I played only 2,400 minutes. JJ (Jordan James) is my age and he played nearly 200 games, so it just shows the difference.
“I was a late developer until 20-and-a-half-years-old that I made my debut, so football is like that.”
