Transfer rumours - August 5

We've scoured the back pages and the internet to bring you the latest transfer gossip.

We are not saying they are true – just that they're out there.

WEST BROM

West Brom could be set to make a shock £6 million bid for England and Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe. They'll find themselves up against QPR for the player's services.

Meanwhile, Albion and and Hull City are both targetting Sunderland midfielder Jack Colback.

WOLVES

Celtic could be set to return with £1.5 million bid for Kevin Doyle, although there are hints that the Molineux hierarchy could accept a slightly lower bid as they look to off-load the high earner from the wage bill.

ASTON VILLA

With a rejected £4m bid from Fulham and no sign of talks with Newcastle United, the Darren Bent saga has taken a new twist with Crystal Palace the latest club to be linked with the striker.

Meanwhile, Villa are said to be confident they can resist any new interest from Spurs in Christian Benteke. The Belgian striker signed a new deal last month after initially asking to leave but it is thought Tottenham could come knocking again if they are armed with bucketloads from the sale of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid.

Villa are still awaiting deals on Shay Given, Stephen Ireland, Alan Hutton, Barry Bannan, Nathan Delfouneso and defender Enda Stevens, who all face a Villa exit.

BIRMINGHAM CITY

With manager Lee Clark told to cut his bill, striker Marlon King has been given permission to sort out a possible deal with other clubs. A number of clubs in England are said to be interested and there have also been enquiries from Europe.

WALSALL
