Steve Bull: Refreshing to see Wolves at front of transfer queue
We won the race to sign Rodrigo Gomes for £12million this week and I’m hopeful he’s going to be the first of a good few coming in and not many going out!

I believe the squad we have at the moment needs adding to, rather than weakening. We were thin on the ground last season and it showed late on, we need the group adding to.
Supporters haven’t had much to cheer about over the last few weeks, with the season ticket prices, but hopefully the winger’s signing is something to be excited about.
I’ve been associated with Wolves now for 39 years and it is one of the earliest signings I can remember for us!
We are usually last in the queue, if you like, to pick these signings up, but it is a great bit of news for the fans as a bit of a pick-me-up to possibly convince a few ahead of the new season, to show the club are going to add to the squad.
Gomes is a young lad, turning 21 this summer, and looks to be from a similar background of Pedro Neto – and we all know he is a top talent. If he can get anywhere close to his compatriot’s quality then he will be a good player for us.
There was interest from elsewhere so it’s good to see us win the race. It’s lovely to see Gary O’Neil be able to act early to add quality. Hopefully it’s a sign we mean a bit of business.
He’s played a bit of top-tier football with Braga, and then Estoril where he had a loan last season, so I’m hoping he is in a position to hit the ground running.
That football will have given him that taste, that bit of experience, so that hopefully he is a young kid with an older head on his shoulders and he takes having new surroundings with a pinch of salt.
It’s so key to get him in before pre-season kicks off. The boss can have a good look at him and assess how best to use him.
Gomes has the whole of pre-season, and friendlies, to adjust to things and likewise his team-mates adjusting to him. Look at O’Neil coming in just days before the start of last season! I think the gaffer will be rubbing his hands with this one and hoping for some more.
The more he can get in as early as possible the better to get things rolling for next season.
Elsewhere, the Euros kicked off last night and we have England’s opener against Serbia in Germany to look forward to tomorrow night.
I’m quietly confident again, just like I was in Qatar in 2022, about England.
Our squad is a couple of years older, but it is still a fresh, up-and-coming group in general.
I believe the front six we can name are absolutely scary. I think they are frightening for any defenders and can win us the games.
When it comes to the defence I’m a little bit more worried. There are some different lads coming in from various clubs and it remains to be seen how they get on.
But they are young, eager and keen and I believe this is one of the strongest squads we have had for a very long time. I believe Gareth Southgate will be absolutely determined to go all the way and win it.
Southgate’s selection was considered bold by some but I believe he’s done a great job for us over the years. I don’t want to put my foot in it but I feel we can go one better than the last Euros in 2021, where it was Italian heartbreak at Wembley.
