Only seven games left, 630 minutes, 37,800 seconds until we become a Championship club again.

Well, I should say almost certainly become a Championship club again, because the Fat Lady hasn't yet put down her overpriced pasty and cleared her throat ready to sing her greasy heart out.

And football being football, hope being hope, there is still the slightest of slight chances that it's not over.

The eternal optimist in me (if I dig really deep he's still there somewhere) knows that a win this weekend, coupled with favourable results elsewhere, leaves us just three points off safety.

Miracles do occasionally happen in this sport of ours, like Greece winning Euro 2004, Wimbledon's ascent from non league to FA Cup winners in 11 years, Arsenal's unbeaten league season or Carlton Palmer getting 18 England caps.

After all, a Wolves fan without hope is just some masochist paying £430 a year (plus carriage fee) to watch a really poor team lose week after week after week. Oh . . .

Realistically though, there's more chance of Jez Moxey giving up the whole football businessman thing and going to India for a year to "find himself" in a hippy commune than there is Wolves staying up.

It's sad, very sad indeed, that we have 21 points left to play for and everyone has pretty much given up on the idea we'll be a Premier League team next season.

The worst emotion to experience in football is apathy but there is vat-loads of the stuff around Molineux at the moment, as evidenced at full time last Saturday.

There was no booing (save for that directed at Tom Daley's mate Mark Davies), no anti-Jez or anti-Morgan chants, just silence.

It's not been this way since spring 2006 when Glenn Hoddle – who has somehow found himself linked with the England job despite being about as employable as one of those incredibly stupid egomaniac Apprentice contestants – was forcing his crab philosophy on the Molineux masses.

It's almost as if so many things have gone wrong this season that there's nothing left to fight against.

The players, the management and the board have all made monumental mistakes and we just don't expect anything from them anymore.

Season ticket renewals are low, home gates are down, the atmosphere is dreadful and even the away support is drying up, as we await the confirmation of the inevitable and pray that this summer brings renewed optimism.

So save for that miracle, what can we ask for from the next seven games?

Well the only thing I want is for the players not to give up, not to argue amongst themselves, not to heap further embarrassment and humiliation on this club.

It probably doesn't mean a thing to them, but as fans our pride is deeply wounded and all I ask for is – if we're going down, can we not do it with a big of fight, a bit of dignity?

Because there is a right way and a wrong way to be relegated and at the moment we're very much in the latter category.

Soulless performances of no quality or guts, in-fighting between team mates, being thrashed by mid-table teams and outfought by our fellow relegation candidates, six points adrift of teams like Wigan and QPR – it's shameful.

Last week's Fumble in the Jungle between Roger Johnson and Wayne Hennessey was just the latest cringeworthy incident and I don't think I can stomach much more.

Yes the first hour against Bolton was brilliant – after waiting nearly three months we finally saw a performance of desire, of high-tempo football, of passion.

But why isn't that being replicated every week? Why wait until now to turn that tap on and start playing like somewhere near the levels we know you're capable of?

We need – no we demand – that effort every single match, because we pay money we can't afford to watch you week in week out and what you've given us back in the past few months has been unacceptable.

So please, and I'm asking nicely now, play for the shirt, play for the badge, play for your futures, or play because you want a pay rise so you can afford a shiny new car, whatever – just find your motivation from somewhere and let's see what you can do for these final seven matches.

Who knows, you might even win a match or two, or avoid extending the club record you've just set for the longest home losing streak in our 135-year history?

Maybe, if the football gods are on our side, you'll win three games and actually take the relegation fight to the last day at Wigan?

But at the very least, just show us you care.
