Scunthorpe have granted the Canaries permission to speak to the 21-year-old after they got close to meeting the Championship newcomers' asking price.

The two clubs have yet to agree a fee for the 32-goal striker but Norwich asked to speak to Sharp to try and ensure he's interested in a move to Norfolk before they push through a deal.

It is believed Scunthorpe are looking for up to £3m, including add ons, for their prize asset, who looks destined to turn down the offer of a new contract with the Iron in favour of trying his luck with one of the Championship's bigger fish.

Norwich are desperate to sign Sharp to boost their firepower after looking like losing out in the race for Southend hitman Freddy Eastwood to Wolves.

Glanford Park sources suggest both Wolves and Sheffield Wednesday have lodged fresh bids for Sharp over the last few days, but neither offer comes close to what the Canaries have put on the table.

But despite Sharp heading for Norfolk for talks, a move to Carrow Road is certainly not a done deal. Sources insist Wolves remain his preferred destination, with Molineux officials understood to be relaxed about today's developments.

Sharp is understood to be excited by the prospect of teaming up again with Andy Keogh, with whom he developed such a deadly partnership at Glanford Park.

Sharp is one of three strikers Wolves are currently pursuing, with Eastwood and Burnley's Kyle Lafferty the others.

It is believed Wolves are hopeful of signing two of the trio, with Sharp and Eastwood potentially the most likely after Burnley boss Steve Cotterill issues a "hands off" warning on his 19-year-old target man.

Boss Mick McCarthy was today linked with a move for Oldham's out-of-contract midfielder Richie Wellens.
