Sam Ricketts in line for new deal at Wolves

Captain Sam Ricketts is set to earn a new contract at Wolves after being told he can 'do a Ryan Giggs' and maybe play until he is 40.

The 32-year-old versatile defender was one of the club's most consistent performers, as he skippered the side to the League One title last season.

Ricketts is into the final year of his contract, however, and head coach Jackett will look at offering the former Bolton stopper a new deal.

The Wolves boss said: "In terms of his contractual situation, I fully expect him to play on at a very good level for many years to come - certainly well into his 30s.

"So it's something we'll certainly consider as we go along in terms of what he can bring and how long he can play.

"I have got no worries about the fact he's 32 – he's a very fit lad who looks after himself.

"He has very good experience and I think he's capable of playing right the way through his 30s.

"He's not missed many games at all and if you look through his career, he's only had one serious injury, to his Achilles.

"Since then he's recovered well and looked after himself."

Ricketts is something of a late developer, after being plucked from non-league Telford United in 2003 at 21 by Jackett when he was in charge of Swansea.

The versatile defender won promotion from the Championship with Hull City and Jackett believes the Wales international will excel at the higher level again.

The head coach said: "I think his form will be fine, he will handle the Championship and have a big effect.

"His style may alter through his 30s because he's very athletic and very naturally fit, which is a big part of his game."

Jackett also confirmed Ricketts will remain captain again this season, after being appointed skipper on his arrival at the club from Bolton last summer.

The Wolves chief said: "He will stay as captain, he was a key player and a key person at the club.

"I think he was ready to move on after a few years at Bolton and he was ready to come here in that role fresh and have that input.

"I think he'll have an input this season; in terms of the Championship, he'll know it very well and his experience will be invaluable.
