Rob Edwards on criticism and the Wolves team he wants to build

Wolves were beaten 3-0 at Brighton.

Rob Edwards understands the criticism of his time as Wolves boss but says the current team is not a ‘reflection’ of the side he wants to build.

The head coach was scathing of his players’ performance after the 3-0 defeat to Brighton, while many fans are unhappy with Edwards’ own showing as the club struggle at the bottom of the table.

Edwards said last week that Wolves’ downfall is not his fault and he stands by that, and hopes to have the chance to create team next season that will play in his preferred style.

“My point was that we came into a situation where the club hadn't won in months and obviously we were on two points already,” he said.

“What we're trying to do is not a reflection of the team that we want to be at the moment.

“We're not able to do that at the moment, so we're just having to hang on and try to stay in games and try to get something from them. Try to take some sort of momentum or positivity from each game.

“When we beat Villa and Liverpool, it wasn't the way I wanted to be able to play. It just wasn't.

“It's just been a case of trying to cling on and try to maximise everyone's performance.

“At the moment, there's got to be someone to blame and, fair enough, I'll take that, that's fine.

“We came in November, Matt Jackson was a little bit after me, Nathan Shi was after that as well.

“So, it's hard to blame any one individual at the moment. So, it would be me who fronts up and stands there. I get it.”

Edwards was criticised for going straight down the tunnel after the draw with Sunderland and after the defeat to Brighton, he marched straight over to the away end.

He was met with boos and plenty of anger, as the head coach clapped the fans, who had attempted to back the team throughout a dreadful display.

“They've travelled a long way and I thought they were outstanding right the way throughout the game,” he added.

“They're right to be angry.

“Consistently, I don't think I've ever criticised them, I've always shown an understanding.

“I know it's been a horrible season - more than a season really, a long period of time now - but this season especially.

“They were brilliant, so I'll go over there and show our appreciation.”
