Rob Edwards explains Matt Doherty's omission from Wolves squad

Wolves and Fulham kick-off at 3pm.

Rob Edwards has revealed Matt Doherty has missed out on Wolves’ squad due to an ongoing knee injury.

The experienced defender was out with the knock when Edwards was appointed in November and he has been managing it ever since.

Doherty, who has spent 13 years at Wolves over two spells, is out of contract in the summer and today’s game with Fulham could have been his last chance to play at Molineux.

Edwards would not be drawn on Doherty’s future, but said the collective decision was made not to risk the player.

“I’m not going to talk about that,” Edwards said of Doherty potentially leaving the club.

“It’s just his knee issue, it’s been an ongoing thing that we wanted to try and settle down for the next couple of weeks.

“He has been feeling it for quite a long time and going through that for us, so it’s important we try to settle that down.”

Edwards made four changes to his side for the Fulham clash, including a recall for Jose Sa after he recovered from an ankle injury.

“He’s been really important for us and missed the last couple of games,” the head coach said.

“The plan was to try to get him back for these two games and the team have worked hard with Sa to do that.

“He’s a big player for us.”

Edwards added: “We want to try and win the game.

“The selection is based on what we think is the right thing to do to win and that’s it.”
