Peterborough 0 Wolves 2

Wolves made it three league wins in a row for the first time since April 2009 with an ultimately comfortable victory over rock-bottom Peterborough at London Road.

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake's 31st-minute penalty - after he was tripped by Grant McCann – and a fine first goal in English football by substitute Bjorn Sigurdarson on 82 – put Stale Solbakken's up to fifth in the Championship and condemned Darren Ferguson's Posh to their seventh straight league defeat.

It was a story that's becoming a familiar tale for Wolves as they were never in any real danger once Ebanks-Blake belted home his fourth goal of the season.

But there were plenty of solid performances that ensured they secured their third success in six days after beating Leicester and Ipswich.

The recalled Kevin Foley was excellent, while Kevin Doyle produced another accomplished performance and Slawomir Peszko had a busy, effective display, while fine defending from Christophe Berra and Roger Johnson saw a second clean sheet in a row.

Boss Stale Solbakken made four changes to the side that beat Ipswich 2-0 on Wednesday as he sought to keep his players fresh facing their third game in six days.

The big talking point was the return of Kevin Foley for the first time this season.

Foley replaced Richard Stearman at right-back, while Slawomir Peszko, Tongo Doumbia and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake were recalled for Razak Boukari, Dave Edwards and Bjorn Sigurdarson.

The three rested players all dropped to the bench as Solbakken kept the same 18 he used at Portman Road.

Peterborough boss and ex-Wolves midfielder Darren Ferguson started former Molineux homegrown players Mark Little and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing.

And the Wolves academy graduates combined to create the first chance of the game in the fourth minute.

The pair exchanged passes before Little teed up Joe Newell, but the midfielder sidefooted well wide after being presented with a good sight of goal.

In a half of numerous shots, Posh forced the first save in the ninth minute when Carl Ikeme did well to get down to smother Grant McCann's swerving, dipping shot from 25 yards.

Wolves' first sight of goal didn't arrive until the 28th minute through Doumbia, whose fierce drive sailed well wide.

Posh should have done better in the 31st minute when Little crossed for Tyrone Barnett, but the former Willenhall and Hednesford striker could only direct his header well off target.

Wolves had enjoyed the better of the possession, if not the chances for the first half hour.

But all that changed after they were awarded a penalty.

Ebanks-Blake took a pass from Doyle just inside the area with his back to goal and was clearly tripped from behind by McCann, who was booked.

The striker belted the ball down the middle from the spot as Olejnik gambled on going to his right and had no chance even if he'd stood up, such was the power of the kick as Ebanks-Blake notched his fourth goal of the season.

The goal was the cue for a sustained period of attacking as the rest of the half.

Doyle fired inches wide from the edge of the box before Wolves could have had another penalty in the 36th minute when Nathaniel Knight-Percival appeared to bundle over Doumbia on the run.

But perhaps the Mali international fell too easily and the referee waved play on.

Doyle enjoyed another fine game and he was denied by Olejnik from an attempted chip following a fine reverse pass from Foley, who also played well.

Peszko had his liveliest outing yet and left two Posh players in a heap in the centre circle before driving forward.

And it was only when he was well into the area that he was challenged as the home side waited for a whistle that never came, when he ran into Gabriel Zakuani.

Both sides forced further routine saves from the keepers before the break, Newell for Posh and Sako from long range for Wolves.

But Ebanks-Blake should have doubled the visitors' lead in the second of the two minutes of time added on, only failing to get a true connection with his volley after Sako's free kick had somehow found its way through to him eight yards out, allowing Olejnik an easy catch.

If the first half ended with Wolves on top, the second started with Posh in the ascendancy.

Christophe Berra did brilliantly to stand up and make the tackle as Newell burst through after the midfielder went through two tackles just outside the area three minutes after the restart.

Then Foley blocked Mendez-Laing's run and Ikeme tipped over Barnett's angled shot from the loose ball as Posh pressed heavily for an equaliser.

But although Posh enjoyed plenty of possession, they failed to create worthwhile chances and lacked the quality to trouble the visitors.

And instead it was Wolves who cashed in with a second goal which came after substitute George Boyd saw a dipping effort drop just wide of the far post which prompted a furious assistant boss Johan Lange to blast captain Karl Henry, presumably for failing to close down the Posh striker.

Sigurdarson shook off his early struggles in English football to score his first Wolves goal in some style.

First dispossessing Posh skipper Gabriel Zakuani, the £2.4m signing calmly drew Olejnik before slotting left-footed across the giant Austrian into the far corner of the net.

There was still time for Boyd to force a fine block from Ikeme at the death.

But Wolves had little trouble hanging on for another win.
