Nathan Judah's Wolves notebook vs Manchester City

Nathan Judah gives his notebook thoughts following Wolves' 2-1 win over Manchester City.

Pre-game

A lot has happened since the Luton game and let's not talk about Ipswich ever again.

There were 10 changes in midweek, but only one made from the 1-1 draw last weekend - and that was enforced.

But it's a pretty major tactical change - out goes the suspended Bellegarde and in comes Toti Gomes.

'Five at the back, pace in atttaaaccck!' Well that's what Gary O'Neil will be hoping for.

I think this was the smart formation to select, you've got to keep it as tight as possible vs City.

You let them play and this could be a cricket score if they're not switched on.

The extra defensive help will give the wing-backs a little more license - especially Semedo who looks a lot more comfortable in a five.

99.9% of the country has this down as an away win banker, but remember this is Wolves - logic goes out the window.

Match

Thank-you Matheus Nunes for uniting a fanbase - the boos were deafening - everyone was pumped up.

He's also apparently qualified as a 'banker' since his move if the crowd were correct?

But Wolves looked so much more comfortable in possession, they moved the ball well and soaked up pressure when they needed to.

City looked threatening, but Jose Sa was never in any major danger.

And then when Wolves got their chance, they took it with both hands.

Pedro Neto is on another level at the minute and Nathan Ake will have thought Halloween came early as the forward ghosted past him on countless occasions - a horror show for the Dutch international.

The catalyst for the opener, it's not just his directness that's refreshingly impressive, his pace is unreal.

Neto is chasing down every ball, sometimes giving up three or four yards and still getting there first - it's some spectacle.

But my main takeaway from the game was Wolves' mental toughness.

I questioned this throughout the week and when Alvarez equalises, many thought a City win was a formality.

But this side showed fight and plenty of quality to deliver a sensational winner through a combination of Cunha and Hwang.

Make no mistake, this is a huge result for so many reasons.

Post-Match

I haven't seen so many smiles on faces for such a long time.

As I interviewed fans outside the stadium, the sheer joy (and relief) and hugs were incredible.

This meant a lot to everyone involved.

The players were sensational and credit to Gary O'Neil for getting his tactics spot on.

To draw at Luton, lose at Ipswich and beat the best side in the world in the same week is pretty ridiculous - but that's why we love this team!

The table looks so much healthier and the belief and confidence this side will get from that result will be huge ahead of the Villa derby next Sunday.

It remains to be seen if GON will revert to a back-four, but for my money, if it's not broken, don't fix it!
