Liam Keen comment: Wolves serious about squad rebuild and Championship push

Liam Keen has his say as Wolves make moves in the transfer window.

After years of damaging transfer windows, it is a welcome relief to see Wolves moving quickly this summer.

The news of Andre’s new contract surprised fans and gave them a taste of the club’s ambition, while the revelations from the Express & Star that Wolves were in talks with Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez got many dreaming of a dominant Championship squad.

Those dreams could become reality and although there is a lot more to do, Wolves have made a stunning start.

Trippier completed his medical on Monday and was announced later that evening as a new Wolves player, bringing a wealth of experience and leadership to a group that is lacking in both and desperate for some inspiration.

Fans are already excited about his signing, but the prospect of bringing Jimenez back to the club has the majority rejoicing, after a deal was agreed between the player and club.

He is adored by the supporters and should still have the quality to impact the Championship, providing Wolves get the balance of the squad right around him.

Wolves staff are in Mexico to complete the deal and it is another sign of the club’s ambition - with big money being spent on wages to attract players of this quality.

Chairman Nathan Shi, technical director Matt Jackson and head coach Rob Edwards all said in the fans’ forum that Wolves were serious about being promoted at the first attempt, but they needed to be judged on actions and not words.

So far, they are living up to their promises and attempting to build a team that will take the second tier by storm.

Balance remains key and there is a lot more recruitment to do, but Wolves are in a much stronger position than they were a few weeks ago and these moves in the market will also help attract other targets.

Considering how aggressive Wolves are being at building this squad, there has to be some concern over the club’s financial position if they fail to get promoted next season, but that is a debate for another day.

Heading into the most crucial transfer window in the club’s modern history, Wolves find themselves now with a chairman that has made a number of good decisions in the early days of his tenure.

Jeff Shi never truly understood the supporters and made a long list of terrible decisions in the years that preceded Wolves’ relegation.

It is early days for N.Shi, but his communication has been far more concise and effective and he has shown a willingness to listen and learn from those around him with expertise in football, as well as the fans.

Pandering too much to popular opinion could result in some bad decisions down the line, but so far he has made a good impression at a time when Wolves urgently need strong leadership.
