Liam Keen comment: Wolves must learn from transfer mistakes

Liam Keen has his say on Wolves’ transfer failures.

The latest controversy surrounding Tolu Arokodare says a lot about Wolves’ dismal failures last summer.

The striker was brought in for nearly £24million and scored just three Premier League goals, while along the way he was disciplined by the club for a dressing room bust up with Mateus Mane in which he was the sole aggressor.

Now, the player has forced the cancellation of a training session this week after refusing to leave the first team group, with him set to leave the club this summer.

Arokodare has since posted a short statement on social media criticising “inaccurate” reports, although he does not explain which details he is referring to or claims the situation did not happen.

In reality, his signing has been a disaster. The player has proven not to be the right fit for Wolves, fell out of favour personally and professionally with former head coach Rob Edwards and has shown little on the pitch to prove he is worth the price tag.

Most transfers are a gamble to some extent and not all of them will be successful, but in recent years and particularly last summer Wolves made a mess of their recruitment strategy and Arokodare is the perfect example of a big-money mistake.

He was initially left out of the squad flying to Portugal so he could focus on securing a move elsewhere, before then flying out on the Thursday evening, just to train the next day but not play against Estoril on the Saturday, with Adam Armstrong nursing a calf injury.

It seemed fairly pointless to fly him out for one training session - and an even more odd decision now after the issue at Compton this week - but Arokodare’s immediate future is certainly not at Wolves.

Trabzonspor did have a loan offer accepted by the club, but it was rejected by Arokodare, with him preferring a move to Italy as Fiorentina had a bid turned down.

The player is still expected to go, most likely on loan, with Wolves unlikely to recoup enough money to warrant selling him this summer.

It is another situation that is dragging on too long, with Wolves needing to do plenty more work in the transfer window.

But the club and powers that be should remember this Arokodare deal. Forgetting it quickly would be foolish because it is a deal that cannot happen again.

A coherent and well-planned recruitment strategy should be the working model going forward and although signings are not coming as quickly as everyone hoped, we can only judge that strategy at the end of the transfer window.

Jorge Mendes has already facilitated the signings of Raul Jimenez and Rafiki Said, while Kieran Trippier was targeted by Edwards before Cesar Peixoto took over.

Leaving it late in the window once again is not advised and could cost Wolves more financially - or even mean they make the same mistakes again - but we have to wait and see exactly what the final squad looks like.

Whatever the final result, Wolves cannot overpay for sub-par players if they want to have a successful season.
