Even though Millers boss Alan Knill was keen to take Johnson, the Express & Star understands the move never progressed past the preliminary stages.
The club are believed to have quoted the Millers £200,000 for Johnson, which is beyond the means of the cash-strapped South Yorkshire outfit.Johnson has only been at Molineux since August but after an explosive start to his Wolves career he has struggled to hold down a regular place in the team.
Wolves supporters would be loathe to lose the pacey player but if McCarthy manages to lure more forwards to Molineux there will inevitably be departures.
Leon Clarke has already been transfer-listed but any further movement out will depend heavily on McCarthy's movements in the transfer window.
At the moment the club have four fit forwards but with the crocked Jay Bothroyd on the road to recovery - and at least one striker joining Stephen Ward through the doors before the end of the month - the club could end up looking decidedly top heavy up front.
With no reserve team football on offer Johnson may be tempted to leave Molineux in search of regular action.
Meanwhile, Rotherham will not be the destination of Wolves' top scorer Clarke. Knill was offered the 21-year-old on loan but opted not to pursue his interest.
The club are also bracing themselves for disappointment in the battle for the signature of Falkirk's £500,000-rated Alan Gow.
