Joao Gomes' Wolves transfer - what we know

Joao Gomes is still likely to leave Wolves this summer.

Joao Gomes’ future at Wolves remains up in the air this summer.

The midfielder is still expected to depart the club, and a deal with Atletico Madrid was previously close to being done, but has since hit a snag.

Here is what we know so far on this transfer saga.

What's happening with the Atletico Madrid deal?

Jorge Mendes and his Gestifute agency have been brokering a deal for Gomes to join the Spanish side this summer and a figure in the region of £40million was being discussed.

The midfielder had actually expressed a desire to stay in the Premier League, but as the deal advanced he was willing to entertain the notion of moving to Madrid.

The deal was expected to go through but has since stalled, with Atletico now looking at alternative options.

A move to Atletico could still materialise, but it now hangs in the balance.

Who else is interested?

Clubs from across Europe and the Premier League have shown interest in Gomes, but the fee has been a sticking point with few clubs willing to pay as much as Atletico were prepared to.

It is still early in the transfer window, however, and other clubs could still come to the table regardless of whether Atletico revive the deal themselves.

It was claimed by former head coach Rob Edwards that Gomes was left out of the squad for the final day of last season at Burnley due to a knee issue, although it is likely that the proposed move to Spain played a part in that decision.

The week before at Molineux, Gomes appeared to be saying goodbye to the Wolves fans, with a move away expected.

How likely is it that he stays at Wolves?

Another season in Wolves colours for Gomes is certainly not out of the question, particularly when Andre has already signed a new deal and committed himself to the club and they have made a strong start by signing Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez.

However, all parties have been planning for a Gomes exit, with the player’s transfer fee likely to be important to Wolves’ recruitment strategy and structure this summer.

Gomes is under contract at Wolves under 2030, with a year option to extend it, and Wolves are in the driver’s seat regarding any deal.

It is not a bad situation for the club to be in and they can demand a strong fee from any club, or potentially keep a talented player.

However, Mendes has been given a mandate by Fosun and club chairman Nathan Shi to find a deal to sell Gomes and that still remains the most likely outcome.
