'It's necessary' - Wolves defender on summer incomings and Joao Gomes deal

Joao Gomes is set to leave Wolves.

Yerson Mosquera insists Wolves need more new signings as he wishes Joao Gomes well for his imminent move to Villa.

The Brazilian midfielder flew back from Wolves’ pre-season training camp in Portugal for his Villa medical ahead of his switch across the West Midlands divide in a deal worth up to £38million including add-ons.

Wolves are assessing their current midfield options, while it is understood they will target a replacement for Gomes this summer, as they prepare for life back in the Championship.

With Gomes’ move to Villa set to go through this weekend, Mosquera has wished his former team-mate well and is confident that ‘necessary’ signings will come through the door.

“He's an amazing player, I told him all the time,” Mosquera said of Gomes.

“He's a very good player. He's a good help for us as well.

“But I think it's a great opportunity for him to go to another club and to play in another competition as well.

“I know everyone wants to play in a different competition but he tries to do his best.

“I know we will miss him but we have to focus right now on pre-season and the season as well.”

When asked about needing a replacement and more signings, Mosquera added: “Some players will be coming to the team because it's necessary, we need players as well.

“Right now everyone has to stay happy for him and to say all the best to him, but we have to put the focus on the next situation.”

Fans have been left frustrated at Gomes’ move, despite an acceptance that he would leave the club this summer, due to his destination and the final fee, which some supporters believe is below his value.

Gomes was originally set to leave for Atletico Madrid with a deal close, but the Spanish club pulled out of talks and moved to other targets, before Villa swooped.

Fans have also been calling for more movement in the transfer window with Kieran Trippier, Raul Jimenez and Rafiki Said the additions so far.

Mosquera, however, remains positive that the squad is in a good place to compete at the top of the Championship next season.

“We have an amazing opportunity to be back as soon as possible to the Premier League because I think we have a good team, we have good players,” he said.

“We have good supporters as well because they are very important for us.

“Everything depends on us. We have to stay focused, we have to keep pushing for that because we have a lot of chances to go again.”
