'It's clear what we have lacked' - Rob Edwards on Wolves' transfer moves
Wolves are set for a huge summer rebuild.
Rob Edwards admits Wolves are seeking to sign the right characters to address the club’s experience and leadership concerns, amid a move for Kieran Tripper.
Wolves have agreed a two-year contract with the 35-year-old, with the option of a third year, and the club are recruiting a real leader that will hold team-mates to account once his medical is completed and contract signed.
The squad has been lacking in that department for some time and it was an area that was not addressed last summer, but Edwards is keen to readdress the balance, although he believes age is less of a concern.
“Some experience, some leadership has certainly been something that we've missed this season,” the head coach said.
“That doesn't mean players have to be 30-odd, they can be 23 with fantastic experience and knowledge of English football as well and they can be leaders as younger players as well.
“I think Mane is a leader in a different way. So you can be and it doesn't mean we're just looking for a certain type.
“The age thing, that's just a number. The right person, that's the right thing that we're looking for.
“But I think it's clear what we have lacked this season as well and we're going to make sure that we try and fill that void that we've missed.”
Wolves have also signed Andre to a new deal, while there have been talks to bring Raul Jimenez back to Molineux now that his contract with Fulham has expired.
These early moves have earned Wolves praise from large sections of the fan base, following a disastrous season that ended in relegation.
Supporters were critical of Edwards towards the end of the season, but the head coach is set to be given Wolves’ summer rebuild and he insists he is ready to ensure change at the club.
“It will probably be difficult for people to hear it at times when, after the relegation, there’s some negativity around, but I'm really energised and looking forward to being part of the change that needs to happen,” Edwards added.
“We're behind the scenes working really, really hard to try and deliver, to try and make that change and to make sure that when we come back in pre-season, we're able to really get to work with what will be a refreshed group.
“Players will still be here, of course, that we want to work with and there'll certainly be some new faces in the door.”
