'Good competition' - Returning star ready to fight for Wolves starting place

The defender has just returned from injury and is eager to make up for lost time.

Yerson Mosquera has vowed to fight for his place in Wolves’ starting XI - claiming competition will bring the best out of the club’s defenders.

The centre-back made his first start since suffering an ankle injury in the opening match of the Championship season in last weekend’s 1-0 win over Watford.

Mosquera watched on as Ladislav Krejci, Nasser Djiga and Toti Gomes all battled for starting places in Cesar Peixoto’s backline.

And he reckons the options available to the head will help drive up standards.

“It’s so good to be back again. I try to prepare, I try to stay ready for this opportunity,” he said.

“I try to help the team as well, because I know Nasser is doing well, Krejci is doing well and Toti as well.

“I have to work to stay close to them or to stay on the same level as them.

“That's really important as well, to support everyone.

“Now I'm ready to play. I have to keep going, to keep working a little bit more. To stay ready for the next game or when the coach needs me.

“I know it's really hard, the competition, but it's a good competition. That's really good.”

Mosquera is effectively fighting Djiga for the starting spot on the right-side of central defence.

The latter had been among Wolves’ most impressive performers before sitting out the Watford win with a groin problem. He is pushing to be back for Saturday’s clash with Cardiff.

Mosquera damaged ankle ligaments in August’s 2-2 draw with Blackburn.

He said: “It was really hard because I want to play. But this can happen to anyone and I have had a couple of injuries like that.

“I had a short time out, now I have recovered and I want to play as many games, and I’m ready for that.

“Everyone is working hard. Everyone is doing well, I have to wait for my moment when they need me.

“I know they are doing well. That's the most important thing. If the team is doing good points and good games, I will wait for my moment. I’m just here to help the team.”
